New Orleans St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 Walking Tour


Local award-winning author and historian Sally Asher will take you on a tour of a famous New Orleans cemetery that she wrote about her in book "Stories from the St. Louis Cemeteries of New Orleans." On this walking tour, you'll learn about burial practices, types of tombs, and visit the graves of some of the city's notable (and notorious) citizens including the hunchbacked photographer who secretly photographed prostitutes, the woman behind the quirky castle, the famed architect whose ship went down with over a 100 prostitutes and circus performers, and legendary chefs who collectively advanced the Civil Rights movement, restored horse racing in the city, and (for better or worse) introduced the turducken to the U.S. The tour takes an 1:15 and is under a mile. On our cemetery tour we will show you around one of our most famous "Cities of the Dead". We invite you to come along with us and visit our family tombs as we tell you about our burials, funerals and the stories of those entombed. We keep the light on for our ancestors by telling their stories. Your guide will be a New Orleanian that has ancestors buried in the cemetery you visit. Come with us on this 90 minute visitation. New Orleans Music Tour


Explore the world’s richest musical city, starting with the legendary Preservation Hall. Visit the site of the Old French Opera House and stroll through the Tango Belt and May Bailey’s before arriving at the Treme section.  Stroll through the Tango Belt to the New Orleans Musicians Tomb in St. Louis Cemetery #1, the use of which was donated by the musical dynasty Barbarin Family for free burial to musicians.  From the cemetery you will check out the remains of Storyville (including Frank Early’s Saloon where “Pretty Baby” was written),  turn-of-the-century red light district whose parlors presented King Oliver, Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet and more during the time when jazz was born.  From Storyville,  venture into Louis Armstrong Park, Congo Square, the only place in North American where pure West African religious ritual and musical traditions were performed.
