Tháp Chiên Đàn Cham Towers are located in one of the early core regions of Vietnam’s indigenous Cham culture, which was centered around the citadels of Indrapura and Simapura (modern Trà Kiệu and Đồng Dương, respectively). Like other early Indianized kingdoms of Southeast Asia who profited off the trade between India and China, the Cham maritime trading culture expanded their influence along the coastal routes of Vietnam. The ruined towers are located on the flat coastal plain about 5 km from the ocean. Their modern name “Chiên Đàn” is the Vietnamese transliteration of the Sanskrit word “chandan”, which means “aloe wood”.
