This 3 hour river safari by boat begins on the Kings Bay Manatee Refuge and takes you on a leisurely cruise out to the Gulf of Mexico and back. Along the way detours will be made one some of the rivers tributaries where we will be in search of various wildlife that inhabit this area. We will pass by the Crystal River Archeological site where you will see the remnants of the temple mound visited Native Americans from as far away away as Central America. As we wind down river toward the Gulf keeps your eyes open for Manatees, Dolphin, Eagles, Osprey, Alligators, Shore Birds and so many other creatures that make their home on the Nature Coast. The 10,000 Islands Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to Everglades National Park, is inaccessible except by boat. Our tour, led by an experienced sheller and certified master naturalist will whisk you to a remote barrier island within the Refuge. While barrier islands such as Sanibel or Captiva offer great shelling, these islands rarely have a foot print on the beaches. Not only can you experience great shelling in a remote location, you will have the opportunity to see dolphin, possibly sea turtles or manatee, and a multitude of birds such as ospreys, eagles, roseate spoonbills, pelicans and the like while cruising to your island. While shelling, learn about the nuances of tides and currents and how it affects sea life. Your captain/guide can make your tour a family learning experience. During the tour we will drive through the districts Saramacca and Coronie with our end stop in Nickerie. The first stop we will make is in Groningen, Saramacca where the locals live from livestock farming and growing fruits and vegetables. Nowadays, a small group still remains in this district because life became difficult and less people where interested in processing coconuts. Most of them came to Paramaribo for a better future. From the coconut culture we end up at the rice culture in Nickerie. The capital of Nickerie is Nieuw Nickerie and has about 30.000 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in Suriname. The Bigipan Nature Reserve is located in Nickerie and is the perfect place for bird and nature lovers. The nature reserve is known as a breeding ground for many bird species, including the Red Ibis.
